If there was one skincare staple that I couldn’t do without during the Winter months, it would have to be lip balm. From walking the dog on frosty mornings to working indoors with the central heating on, chapped lips are an accessory we’ve all worn as the cooler weather hits.
So you can imagine my delight when the Brad at Ethically Organic kindly offered to send me their range of lip balms to try. As I had already been blown away by the brand’s ethos and quality of their Organic Anti-Aging Face Oil, I couldn’t wait to discover more from their range of natural and organic beauty products which contain ingredients which are all ethically sourced, sustainable and endorsed as cruelty free by PETA.
Ethically Organic have five lip balm flavours within their balm range, which is certified as vegan friendly by the Vegan Society. Each balm is formulated with Fair Trade Coconut Oil and Shea Butter, which is farmed in Ghana under the Cooperative Multipurpose Society. This non-government organisation is aiding sustainable and fairer trade relationships between Ghana and international markets, as well as helping those who are most vulnerable rise out of poverty. Ethically Organic purchase these goods direct from a UK supplier to minimise their carbon footprint, and are completely transparent in their practices to enable you to shop in confidence knowing that the brand is as ethical as they can be.
What sets Ethically Organic’s lip balms aside from several other brands on the market is their appearance, as they all have beautiful bamboo packaging which is both stylish and practical, as it makes it incredibly easy to find it in your handbag! Ethically Organic made the decision to include a plastic interior to their bamboo packaging for hygiene reasons, as bamboo has a natural absorption quality that would render it unhygienic within a few uses. However, the plastic interior (and outer label) is fully recyclable, and of course, the empty lip balm container can be reused with your DIY recipes. Ethically Organic are so invested in their impact on the environment that they are currently experimenting with how long their bamboo containers take to biodegrade to ensure that the impact on the environment is as minimal as possible.
I’ve been trying the balms out for two weeks now and have been loving them so far. Their range caters for everyone, as they have an array of flavour choices from their Pure Unscented balm to intense mint, zesty fruit and deliciously sweet treats…
Pure Unscented Lip Balm
It is nice to find a brand that stocks an unscented lip balm which looks are appealing to the eye as their flavoured variety. Ethically Organic’s Pure Unscented Lip Balm* is a nourishing blend of Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Carnauba Wax and Vitamin E to soften the lips and keep them feeling nourished and free-from chapping. The balm itself is creamy in texture and glides over the lips with ease for hassle-free application. The balm feels comfortable on the lips and doesn’t feel sticky or greasy at all, simply giving lips a smooth, soft and moisturised feel that stays on for several hours. I have even eaten with my lip balm on and have to say that it stayed put throughout my lunch, making it great value for money as I don’t have to re-apply as often as I would with lip balms i’ve used in the past. The Pure Unscented version is minimal in its ingredients, but incredibly effective in its performance by giving maximum results. To find a fragrance free lip balm that feels so nice to wear is hard to come by, but thankfully Ethically Organic have certainly achieved a great formula that has gone beyond my initial expectations.
Lemon Lip Balm
Ethically Organic’s Lemon Lip Balm* uses the same great formula as the Pure Unscented Lip Balm with the addition of lemon peel oil to give the balm its zesty scent. I’m a lover of all things citrus, especially when it comes to my skincare products so was very excited to try this out. I’ve had a few lip balms in the past that have a lemon scent but Ethically Organic’s Lemon Lip Balm is by far the most intense lemon flavour i’ve experienced. The scent is stunning, harnessing the true essence of fresh lemons which remains for some time. It had the same great feel as the Pure Unscented and certainly kept my lips feeling in tip top condition.
Chocolate Lip Balm
In the same way as the Lemon Lip Balm, the base of the Chocolate Lip Balm* is the same great formula as the Pure Unscented but also features Cocoa Seed Powder which is responsible for the amazing rich colour and heavenly chocolate scent. Ethically Organic’s Chocolate Lip Balm is the most unique i’ve tried as not only does it smell good enough to eat (beware chocoholics – it’s not to be eaten!), but it gives lips a beautiful subtle brown hue that gives the appearance of a sheer lipstick with the nourishing power of a lip balm. The texture of the balm is slightly firmer than its other counterparts, with application not quite as smooth in the first instance, yet as soon as its on your lips it is equally as nourishing as the rest of the range.
Vanilla Lip Balm
I have to say that I was initially dubious about trying Ethically Organic’s Vanilla Lip Balm* as I rarely use vanilla-scented products as they are often too sickly sweet in scent. My concerns were instantly laid to rest when I first tried this, as not only is the vanilla scent rich and decadent thanks to the Vanilla Planifolia Extract, but it doesn’t have the sweetness i’ve previously experienced. The Vanilla Lip Balm has a slightly softer texture to the rest of the range with the addition of Sunflower Seed Oil to the Pure Unscented base, and leaves lips feeling hydrated and deeply moisturised. It has the same great longevity as the other balms, but I would say the scent dissipates slightly quicker than some of the other flavours in the range.
Peppermint Lip Balm
When it comes to lip balms, i’m a huge fan of minty flavours so was very excited to try this particular balm from Ethically Organic’s lip balm range. The scent of peppermint instantly hits you as soon as you open the lid and is intense yet perfectly balanced and not overpowering at all. The scent (and taste for that matter) is one of the longer lasting flavours in the range and leaves lips feeling nourished and silky smooth. The texture is very similar to the Lemon Lip Balm, as it’s soft and gives lips a nice demi-matte finish. Ethically Organic’s Peppermint Lip Balm* has become my on-the-go lip balm and now lives in my handbag alongside my other beauty essentials.
To say that Ethically Organic’s lip balm range is impressive feels like an understatement, as each one is unique yet performs amazingly well thanks to the rich base formula which remains unchanged throughout the range. The great price and staying power of the balms themselves make them great value for money, and the hygienic packaging allows for easy on the go application so there’s no excuse for chapped lips throughout the year. I love everything from the intense natural aromas of the lip balm flavours, to the unisex packaging that makes these great gifts as well as beauty essentials. The brand’s ethos and dedication to great quality, ethical ingredients is certainly realised within their products and they are certainly a brand to watch out for in the future.
