The Cruelty Free Beauty Box: August (Review)

One of my favourite places to shop for green beauty goodies is The Cruelty Free Beauty Box, as they never fail to stock an array of amazing green beauty delights to keep my beauty stash well and truly stocked up. Their beauty box subscription service had been on my radar for a while, so when the lovely Chloe at The Cruelty Free Beauty Box asked if i’d like to review one of their boxes, I was delighted to say the least…

When it comes to beauty box variety, you really can’t go wrong with The Cruelty Free Beauty Box* as they have 6 different beauty box subscription options available from 3 – 12 products, lifestyle and snack choices and everything in between. The following plans are available and can be tailored to your personal preference:

Each of the boxes detailed above can be personalised to include no make-up, nail products etc and are packaged in eco-friendly packaging (with even the information card printed on seed paper so you can have pretty blooms with each box!).

The Cruelty Free Beauty Box goes further than other beauty boxes when it comes to their ethics, as not only are all the products sold vegan and cruelty free, but they also donate 10% of profits to a different charity every month and for every 5 boxes sold, 1 tree is planted in the Borneo Rainforest.

I was kindly sent August’s Original box which is available until the 21st September (or until stocks last). My Original Box was free-from make-up items, as this suited my needs, and I was impressed by the box presentation and overall appearance.

The original box contained 6 items, all plastic free or fully recyclable, and had a great variety of products from haircare and deodorant to skincare and multi-use goodies. I have already had an experience with several of the brands featured yet this was the first time of using any of the products in this edit.

Greenfrog Botanic: Konjac Facial Sponge

20190910_193828.jpg

I was excited to see this addition to August’s box as it’s been a while since I used a Konjac sponge in my routine (and seeing this reminded me of how much i’d missed it!). Konjac sponges are a completely biodegradable facial sponge designed to gently cleanse and exfoliate the skin with, or without, the addition of cleansing products. The plant-based sponges are rich in minerals and antioxidants to keep your skin looking and feeling at its best, and the handy string allows the sponge to dry between uses making it perfect for both your AM and PM cleansing routine. Greenfrog Botanic’s Konjac Sponge is slightly larger than my previous sponge which made it easier to use within my skincare routine. Before each use the sponge itself needs immersing in water to soften, which only takes a few minutes at most and then you are ready to start your cleansing routine. As I have a very dry skin type, I tend to use this without cleansing products in my morning routine and then as a second cleanse with a light cleansing product in the evening. I have to say that the sponge works perfectly each time, lightly exfoliating the skin while keeping it fresh, clean and bright after use. I find that it boosts my cleansing products more thanks to it’s natural cleansing and exfoliating properties, and is more gentle on my skin than a muslin cloth.  What is even more impressive is that when it comes to the end of its life in around 8 weeks time, you simply pop it among your vegetable and fruit scraps to be composted so it is zero-waste! If you’re looking to change up your cleansing routine and rid yourself of extra laundry, then try the Konjac sponge – I’m sure you won’t be disappointed.

Love Absolute: Blue Moon Facial Bar

20190910_193752.jpg

Love Absolute are among my favourite plastic-free skincare brands as my experience with their products is always positive. The Blue Moon Facial Bar contains fine sea clay, butterfly pea antioxidant, elderberry seed oil and organic colloidal oats to repair the skin, emulsify dirt and impurities from the pores, nourish the skin, improve micro-circulation and maintain the skin’s natural vibrancy after exposure to daily pollution. The addition of lemongrass and lavender essential oils gives the Blue Moon Facial Bar it’s fresh and lightly floral scent that is a true treat for senses as well as the skin. The bar itself creates a gentle lather which is creamy and non-drying on the skin, leaving your face feeling clean and fresh without any feelings of tightening. I’ve been using this everyday since my box arrived and I’ve been loving the results. My skin looks clean and fresh and is the perfect cleansing texture to work in harmony with the Konjac Sponge detailed above. The bar is only showing minimal signs of usage so far, so it is certainly going to last longer than my usual cleansing products. I have to say I didn’t think Love Absolute could beat their Deep Ocean Facial Mud Bar that i’ve used in the past but Deep Blue has certainly exceeded my expectations and is now my cleansing bar of choice. If you’re looking for ways to reduce your plastic waste from your daily routine, Love Absolute demonstrates how easy it is to change your skincare habits and opt for guilt-free beauty products that work. For the eco-friendly novice to the skincare expert, Love Absolute certainly have you covered.

The Salt Parlour: Salt & Sulphur Scrub (Calm – Rose and Shea Butter)

20190910_193454.jpg

I have to say that I am always thrilled to see a body scrub in beauty boxes as they keep my dry skin type in tip top condition. I was glad to see The Salt Parlour Scrub in August’s box as they are already a favourite of mine to banish flaky skin and leave it feeling nourished after use. It is no surprise that the Calm scrub was awarded Editior’s Choice in the Beauty Shortlist Awards 2018 as the Pink Himaylan Salt, Rose Oil, Shea Butter and Organic Rose Petal scrub certainly performs as well, if not better, that their other scrubs i’d tried in the past. The scrub itself has a coarse texture, which isn’t too abrasive, to deeply exfoliate the skin while shea butter moisturises, leaving behind glowing skin that looks and feels soft and smooth. The addition of rose gives the scrub a beautifully floral aroma that boasts a real pampering experience, one of which I would recommend to anyone.

The Salt Parlour: Calm (Rose and Shea Butter Scrub) – £8.95/80g or £16.95/200g

Bao Skincare: Nourish Urself Treatment Balm

20190910_193612.jpg

Bao Skincare are another one of my favourite skincare brands yet I hadn’t got around to trying out this multipurpose treatment balm. Nourish Urself is the perfect multi tasker, a beauty balm that can not only be used as a treatment balm, nighttime mask and facial moisturiser but also as a nourishing cleanser too. The treatment balm itself contains a plethora of vitamin-rich ingredients such as shea and cocoa butters, calendula oil, argan, rosehip, jojoba and baobab seed oil, as well as frankincense, rose, geranium and neroli essential oils, to give the balm it’s soft and moisturising formulation that aims to soothe, calm and intensely nourish the skin while preventing redness and irritation. The scent is truly luxurious, with a warm, floral aroma that gives the balm a spa-like fragrance that promotes a truly pampering experience with every application. The soft balm is so concentrated that a little goes a long way, leaving behind only the hint of a non-greasy sheen on the skin.  I have to say that i’ve been using this on areas of dry skin, on patches of eczema and as a make-up remover over since it arrived and have been blown away by the results so far. My skin feels less dry and a lot calmer, and the redness around my nose has been significantly reduced. The overall feel of my skin, especially on my eczema flare-up’s, has been greatly improved and I can’t wait to see how this performs on a longer term basis. Just like every single product i’ve tried from Bao Skincare, the Nourish Urself Treatment Balm certainly delivers on its promises and I’m excited to try even more from their extensive range of skincare goodness.

Bloomtown: Lemongrass & Peppermint Shampoo Bar

20190910_193533.jpg

I must say that like many people aiming to reduce their plastic waste, I have a somewhat love/hate relationship with shampoo bars as i’m still on the quest for the one to replace my traditional shampoo. I was thrilled to see Bloomtown’s shampoo bar grace The Cruelty Free Beauty Box as they are a brand that always deliver on high quality products that give great results  – so I was hopeful that could be the one! Bloomtown’s Shampoo Bar is crafted with plant oils to balance and cleanse the hair without leaving it feeling or looking dry. The addition of peppermint, lemongrass, ginger and rosemary essential oils gives the shampoo bar an incredibly fresh and invigorating aroma that uplifts the senses as well as freshening the hair. The shampoo bar itself lathers beautifully, rinses easily and leaves hair feeling squeaky clean. I have to say that this is possibly one of the best shampoo bars i’ve used to date as not only did it banish my oily roots but it left my hair feeling soft and free from any residue. I’m still trying this out to determine whether it will be a long term switch for me however, as far as first impressions go, it has certainly left me optimistic that this could indeed be the shampoo bar i’ve been looking for. Another positive note is that this also works wonders on skin, leaving it cleansed without any dryness at all (and smelling gorgeously fresh too!). If you’re looking for a shampoo bar to try out then this is a great choice –  especially as it has a duel purpose so will never go to waste if it doesn’t suit your hair. I will certainly be keeping you posted on how I get on but from what I’ve experienced so far, it certainly has a lot of potential!

Bain & Savon: Natural Deodorant Creme (Tea Tree and Bergamot)

20190910_193638.jpg

I love discovering new natural and affordable deodorants so was very happy to see this Natural Deodorant Creme from Bain & Savon feature in August’s edit. The handmade deodorant has a lovely texture that has a creamy, almost clay like consistency,  that immediately rubs into the skin without leaving any residue behind. The scent is lovely and fresh, with punchy tea-tree and citrus notes that are intense yet perfectly balanced when applied to the skin. The deodorant kept me smelling fresh all day, even when i’ve been out and about in the sunshine, and my underarms haven’t been irritated at all. I will certainly be trying out the full-sized version of this when my current deodorant runs out as the unique texture has been a welcome change from my usual deodorant that is sometimes slightly greasy on application. Its performance has certainly exceeded my initial expectations and I can’t wait to explore the other fragrances available in their extensive range.

Bain & Savon: Natural Creme Deodorant – £3.50/15ml or £6.00/25ml

To say i’ve enjoyed my first edit of The Cruelty Free Beauty Box feels like a little bit of an understatement as the service and box contents has certainly impressed me. The dedication and passion for cruelty-free skincare and impact on the environment is incredible, with a great value box that would be sure to brighten anyone’s day.  The attention to detail in everything from the packaging to each type of box available makes The Cruelty Free Beauty Box stand out from the crowd and will certainly be a box i’ll be adding to my beauty box deliveries very soon.
