When it comes to our beauty routines, multitasking products are certainly having their moment right now, with formulations that are not only time savers but also incredibly ethical too…

What is Multipurpose Beauty?

As we all muddle through everyday life we are constantly using items that are multi-functional, whether it be our phones that capture memories, plan our schedules and keep us connected to the rest of the world or our favourite dress that is perfect for a wide variety of occasions and seasons; so why shouldn’t our skincare be the same? Multipurpose products within our daily lives are all about convenience, saving time and money as well as helping us create space and keep things accessible. These factors sound like the foundation of a great beauty routine, eradicating the excess which the beauty industry has been so focused upon in previous years. But why is multipurpose beauty so important right now and more importantly, how can it change up our routine for the better…

Why is Multipurpose the Beauty Word of the Moment?

Living in a global pandemic has had a huge impact upon the way the beauty industry has evolved over the past 22 months. Routines and habits have changed dramatically from pre-covid which has inevitability altered how we have use our products. Generally speaking, staying home through lockdown lead to a more minimal approach to beauty in both product use and effort, wearing less make-up, missing beauty treatments and embracing a more natural look. I’m sure we were all caught out once or twice reaching for those products before switching the camera on while Zooming, so streamlining routines became a sure way of making sure we were always camera ready (who else loves an all-in-one tinted balm for quick application?). Even if the global pandemic hadn’t altered some of our beauty habits, the time saving aspect from streamlining our beauty routines becomes essential in our busy lives, saving time where we can in order to enjoy that me-time and self-care we all so desperately need.

Streamlining with the help of multipurpose beauty products not only saves time in our routine but also helps to save space. Storage and space is a premium which many of us don’t have the luxury of, so adjusting your skincare stash or make-up bag can really help gain space you never thought you had, as well as helping to save money, be more travel-friendly and reduce product wastage. As we all try to do our bit to reduce waste, multipurpose beauty can be the easy switch to improve your impact upon the environment. It is no surprise that approximately 20 – 40% of all beauty products manufactured will end up as waste*, and with the beauty industry creating 120 billion units of packaging annually**, the figures are quite startling.

Making the Multipurpose Switch

You’d be surprised to discover that many of the products already in your collections are multipurpose, from skincare to make-up and everything in between. Blushers make great eye shadows, lipsticks work on the cheeks too, mascaras also work on dark hair to tame flyaways and body oils can be used in the bath and as a hair oil on the ends of your hair. Shopping your stash and looking at the multitude of ways to use beauty products is a fun exercise that can have great results, reaping those benefits to help make our routines that little bit more convenient and eco-friendly. When purchasing new skincare, brands are helping take the guess work out of multipurpose beauty by showcasing how you can use items in multiple ways. Obviously not every product in your beauty routine needs to be multipurpose, as sometimes a singular-purpose product is an essential, but making small adjustments within your routine it can have a big impact.

Nourish London: Putting the Purpose into Multipurpose

Nourish London are a British organic beauty brand marrying science and nature together to create a product range that is not only effective at targeting specific skin concerns but also boasts several multi-taskers that integrate seamlessly into your beauty rituals.

Dr Pauline Hili, the founder of the brand, believes that multitasking skincare is key within our routines as we lack so much time within our daily lives:

“In a world where we are all time poor, we need products that are simple in their application and deliver multiple benefits to the skin. This and a desire to deliver short term and longer term benefits to the skin is the rationale behind Nourish London’s multi-tasking formulation strategy.  By delivering short and longer term benefits, we are maximising the benefits to the skin’s health.”

What I love in particular about Nourish London’s multitasking products is that they maintain their luxurious feel and don’t sacrifice performance in order to formulate multipurpose skincare. They have made it incredibly easy to make the multipurpose switch by creating versatile products that are multi-action yet are still recognisable as the products we know and use on a day-to-day basis. With this in mind, here is a round-up of some of my favourite multi-taskers from the Nourish London range.

Nourish London: Antioxidant Peptide Face Mist: £7 – £22

|AD – PR Product| A face mist is an integral part of my skincare routine and Nourish London’s Antioxidant Face Mist is certainly no exception. The mist contains a wealth of skin loving ingredients to calm, refresh, hydrate and protect the skin, tackling the skin concerns most associated with pollution and free radical damage.

You can use Nourish London’s Antioxidant Peptide Face Mist in various ways from misting your skin after cleansing, refreshing your make-up throughout the day, cooling your skin in the warmer weather and using a little to activate powdered skincare. I also like to incorporate this into my bodycare routine too if my skin has dried a little too quickly after a bath or shower. We all know that skincare penetrates better when applied to damp skin, so misting your body before applying creams, butters and oils ensures that products are working to the best of their ability.

Nourish London: Kale Enzymatic Exfoliator: £19

|AD -PR Product| We all know the benefits of exfoliation but Nourish London’s Kale Enzymatic Exfoliator is a little different, not only giving you the benefits of an enzyme-based exfoliant but also a delicate physical scrub too. Yet Nourish London haven’t stopped there, pushing their facial polish further as a daily cleanser too. The exfoliator may sound like too much for daily use but the formulation is actually so gentle that it is perfect for even the most sensitive skin.

Much like the Antioxidant Peptide Face Mist, the Kale Enzymatic Exfoliator targets the effects urban pollution has on our skin, helping to maintain radiance and keeping skin looking and feeling at its best. You can use this as a daily cleanser or as an exfoliating face mask, cutting down on those additional facial exfoliators that we only use occasionally. I must say that I also enjoy using this as a hand scrub/mask to keep my skin supple, giving it yet another multi-use element.

Nourish London: Antioxidant Multi-tasking Super Beauty Balm: £13 – £34

|AD -PR Product| I must admit that out of all the Nourish London products i’ve used over the years, this has to be my favourite. I am a huge balm fan anyway when it comes to skincare textures and Nourish London’s Antioxidant Multi-Tasking Super Beauty Balm delivers great results every time, with its concentrated formula that is truly the gift that keeps on giving.

When listing it’s uses, it would probably be easier to list what this Super Balm doesn’t do as it is so versatile in its applications. The soft balm is great as a cleanser, overnight mask, moisturiser, CC Cream (when mixed with your favourite foundation), make-up base for a dewy finish, dry skin balm…the list is endless.

It is great on the face and body, fighting free radicals while also nourishing, detoxifying and helping reduce the signs of aging. This is a great all-rounder and a product I highly recommend having in your beauty collection as it really lives up to its Super Balm title.

Nourish London: Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask: £4.25 – £25

|AD – Pr Product| Who doesn’t love a face mask? This Probiotic Multi-Mineral Repair Mask is not only multi-functional (in both application and targeted skin concerns) but is also a time saver too as it gives great results in just 5 minutes. The formulation is balancing, radiance boosting and nourishing on the skin, helping restore firmness, tackling maskne and the irritated effects of pollution.

The mask is easy to apply and leaves skin feeling soft, supple and glowing in its appearance. What I love most about this mask in particular is that it absorbs into the skin so you can do other things while not worrying about it drying out like a traditional clay mask. It is also a great overnight mask too, giving skin an intensive treatment while you sleep so you wake with skin that is ready for the day ahead.
