When you think of skin health, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Is it the condition of your skin, or whether you’re using the best skincare products? While these are important, true skin health goes far beyond surface-level care. It’s about understanding the intricate connection between what’s happening inside your body and how it manifests on your skin.
With over thirty years as a facialist and holistic massage therapist, I’ve witnessed first hand how environmental stressors and internal imbalances impact our skin. I’ve seen how the foods we consume daily influence our gut health, which in turn affects our overall vitality and skin’s appearance. Over the years, the conversation around skincare has shifted—more people are recognising the importance of nutrient-dense, whole foods to support our microbiome and restore harmony within our bodies.

My own journey into this understanding deepened during the challenging phase of perimenopause. Suddenly, my body felt like an alien territory—chaotic and unrecognisable. My skin, which once behaved predictably, began to lash out. I tried many avenues to restore calm—yet I was never told how the internal terrain changes during this time. Most often, I was offered hormone replacement therapy as the primary solution.
Then, I began exploring a naturopathic approach—simply focusing on whole foods and eliminating ultra-processed foods. Over months, a gentle wave of restoration washed over my body. Nourishing my gut with wholesome, nutrient-dense foods brought a radiant glow, and my skin health improved accordingly. Addressing the storm within my gut became the key to my transformation. It was a revelation that changed my life.

This experience led me to study gut health and the immune system more deeply. And here’s what I’d love to share. The skin is like a mirror to the gut—reflecting what’s happening internally. This relationship is known as the gut-skin axis, and it’s a vital pathway of communication between these organs. Scientific research has uncovered how pivotal our gut microbiome is in maintaining a balanced and healthy skin microbiome. Ultimately, how our gut responds internally influences our skin’s resilience and appearance.
Supporting Your Skin Starts with Nourishing Your Gut
When the gut is out of balance—whether through harmful bacteria, inflammation, or poor diet—skin issues like rosacea, acne, and extreme dryness can arise. Conversely, a healthy gut, teeming with beneficial bacteria, supports skin health by reducing inflammation, balancing hormones and promoting detoxification—essential processes for maintaining a vibrant complexion and good lymphatic drainage.
Did you know that approximately 70% of your immune system cells reside in your gut? These cells work closely with the beneficial bacteria living there, forming a vital partnership. By nourishing your gut microbiome with nutrient-rich foods, you’re strengthening your entire immune system. Your gut influences every part of your body—your mind, mood, energy, and resilience. It’s often called your second brain, and for good reason as it creates a healthy terrain, to produce beneficial cells for our immune system.

Your skin, as the body’s largest organ, hosts over 10 billion bacterial cells. The skin microbiome is a community of trillions of micro organisms that plays an essential role in your overall health. Like the gut microbiome, it interacts with your immune system, helping to prevent pathogenic bacteria, reduce inflammation and restore balance. The gut and skin microbiome restore the natural terrain and rebuild the conditions that allow our bodies systems to regulate and flow, if we provide the best nutrients.
Simple Steps to Support Gut and Skin Health
Supporting your gut health with nourishing foods creates a foundation for glowing skin and overall well-being. Here are some stackable steps, to create the building blocks to detoxify and restore balance to your body:
– Prioritise Balanced Nutrition: Incorporate a variety of whole foods, healthy fats (like extra virgin olive oil, avocados, nuts, flaxseed oil, and oily fish) which support cell repair and reduce inflammation. Fibre-rich vegetables (such as beetroot, carrots, sweet potatoes, kale, and broccoli) aid in the detox processes and provide essential nutrients. Don’t forget adequate protein, especially at breakfast—full-fat Greek yogurt is an excellent choice.
– Embrace Probiotics: Fermented foods like kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, and kombucha provide beneficial bacteria that replenish your gut microbiome.
– Feed Your Beneficial Bacteria with Prebiotics: Foods like leeks, asparagus, bananas, onions, and garlic nourish your gut bacteria and will create a thriving terrain.
– Limit Ultra-Processed Foods: Foods high in sugar, refined carbs, and unhealthy fats disrupt gut harmony. Focus on nutrient-dense, whole foods that energise your body.
– Stay Hydrated: Drinking water and warming herbal teas help flush your digestive system and support your skin. Sage tea, for instance, is known to help with hot flushes and inflammation. I take a few leaves from my garden, steep in hot water and enjoy it throughout the day.
– Incorporate Beta-Glucans: These are a soluble fibre found naturally in the cell walls of certain grains, fungi and yeasts. You can find these in oats, barley, mushrooms (shiitake, reishi, lion’s mane), these soluble fibres support immune function and help regulate cholesterol. These beta-glucans form a gel-like substance in the gut which can bind to cholesterol and other substances, helping to remove them from the body and modulate immune activity.
– Eat Anti-Inflammatory Foods: Green leafy vegetables, celery, pineapple, blueberries, and other antioxidant-rich foods alkalise and nourish your body.
Holistic Approach to Radiant Skin
My journey has revealed that beautiful, glowing skin truly begins from within. A holistic approach—combining a plant-focused, nourishing diet with targeted natural skincare—can be transformative. When internal balance is restored, external radiance follows naturally.

At Thalia Botanics, I am inspired to incorporate botanical extracts and nutrient-rich oils into my formulations, with mushroom extracts playing a key role in my latest creations. The synergy of gut and skin health offers a powerful pathway to overall well-being—inside and out. Our skin’s health is a reflection of our internal terrain. Nourish it accordingly, and you’ll discover a luminous, resilient glow that radiates from the inside out.
