Summer is the season of longer days, getaways and sunshine yet it is also the season of allergies and hayfever that can reap havoc on our skin. During the Summer months, I like to alter my skincare routine, opting for more scent-free products than usual to keep my skin as calm as possible and integrate them with my existing favourites.
One of the latest scent-free collections i’ve been trying out is PHB Ethical Beauty’s Gentle skincare range, formulated with hypoallergenic ingredients that are proven to cool and calm sensitive and eczema prone skin.
The range features skin loving ingredients such as rosehip, avocado, rose water, shea butter and apricot that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants to help repair sensitive skin, nourish dryness, reduce redness and keep skin glowing and protected from environmental damage. As the formulations in the Gentle range are free-from essential oils, they are perfect for those who suffer from rosacea, allergies and are also suitable for use throughout pregnancy. As with all PHB Ethical beauty products, the range is cruelty-free, natural, organic, certified halal, vegan friendly and handcrafted in the UK. As well as this, 20% of PHB profits are donated to charity so you are not just purchasing skincare, you are really making a difference on a much larger scale.
There are four products in the whole Gentle range including a cleanser, a rosewater mist, a rosehip serum and a moisturiser to cater for all your skincare needs. I have been using both the rosehip serum and gentle moisturiser for several months and have been impressed by their performance so far, especially as they are more affordable compared to similar products from other brands on the market.
Gentle Face & Eye Serum
If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know that I love a multiuse product and PHB’s Gentle Face & Eye Serum is certainly no exception. The serum packaging makes for easy application, with a glass bottle and pump that dispenses the perfect amount to ensure you don’t waste product. The 20ml size may seem small but don’t let that fool you, as this really is the gift that keeps on giving and much like their Blemish Gel i’ve used in the past, is long lasting and great value for money.
The Gentle Face & Eye Serum is formulated to help nourish and restore radiance to the skin, maintaining optimum skin health and a youthful glow. The addition of rosehip as a key ingredient is high in vitamin A so will keep fine lines and wrinkles at bay while also improving moisture levels. Avocado oil intensely nourishes and protects the skin, and as it is naturally high in Vitamin E, will also reduce inflammation, increase elasticity and soften the skin.
The serum itself has a very subtle aroma from the natural ingredients that are exactly as nature intended, with a slight freshness that is hardly noticeable and living up the scent-free formulation. The serum is rich in texture when pumped onto your hand yet as you apply to skin, it feels incredibly lightweight with a silky smooth consistency that applies to the skin with ease, absorbing in an instant and leaving behind no residue. My skin is was left feeling soft and smooth immediately after use, with additional products layering nicely on top without any pilling or heaviness at all.
Where I really feel PHB’s Gentle Serum came into its own was as an eye product, as it sat beautifully under the eye area and didn’t leave my eyes watering as many other eye products do.
After long term use, I have to say that this product will certainly be on my repurchase list as I really loved how it made my skin look and feel after use. The serum kept my very dry skin type feeling comfortable and flake-free and my complexion certainly looked brighter as my skin was so nourished. I loved how I could save time by using the serum as both a facial product and eye serum and felt like it just improved the texture and appearance of my skin. It was a lovely product to utilise in my routine during the warmer weather as it didn’t feel heavy or greasy on my skin in the heat. If you’re looking for a skincare saviour for sensitive skin then this is certainly the product for you.
PHB’s Gentle Moisturiser boasts similar package to the Gentle Face & Eye Serum with a glass bottle and handy pump to make application clean, easy and incredibly effective as one pump seems just the right amount of product per use. The Gentle Moisturiser contains apricot and shea butter to smooth and soften the skin while also helping to cool redness and irritation to leave skin intensely nourished and looking healthier in its appearance.
The moisturiser is very light in texture due to its water-based formula and it really absorbs quick and easy while also maintaining a slightly dewy appearance. The consistency meant that my skin didn’t feel sticky and it sat nicely over the Gentle Face & Eye Serum, and was the perfect product under my daily SPF. I’m personally not a fan of the product’s aroma, as it has quite a strong almost talc-like scent that doesn’t dissipate quick enough from the skin as I would like it to, but that’s just my personal preference as I don’t like lingering scents from my facial skincare products.
The scent didn’t put me off enough to stop using this, and i’m so glad I didn’t, as my skin really enjoyed the formulation. My dry skin didn’t experience any tightness or areas of dryness during the day, so was nourishing enough despite its lightweight texture. It really delivered when it came to cooling redness, as it certainly helped to calm my colour down, especially on warmer days, and over consistent use, did leave my skin feeling less irritated. On areas of eczema, I felt like it stopped the itch which was an added bonus, but for me, it didn’t leave the flaky patches of eczema as moisturised as i’d like them but it worked well in conjunction with a balm over the top for an additional nourishing boost on these areas.
On a long term basis, I have to say that PHB’s Gentle Moisturiser delivered as it kept my skin feeling soft, smooth and moisturised during the day without feeling greasy or leaving my face looking sweaty in the heat. I enjoyed using it when my skin was just dry, or even when it had heat-induced irritation, but for me personally, I didn’t feel like it worked as well when my eczema was at it’s worst. However, I must say, it really helped when my eczema patches were starting to heal as it stopped the itch which in turn, seemed to speed up the healing process. I think this is a great moisturiser for the Summer, especially during warm days, and I certainly think it’s a great one to try if you’re looking for a lightweight, everyday moisturiser without essential oils.
I must say that PHB Ethical Beauty certainly didn’t disappoint with their Gentle range that has been perfect for the Summer weather. Both the serum and moisturiser delivered on their promises and for the most part, were a great addition to my skincare routine. My favourite product has to be Face & Eye Serum as I noticed a big difference on the look and feel of my skin with continued use, and found that even when my skin was irritated, it still worked as well as it did when my skin was normal (or as normal as it can be!). I think out of the two products, this is the one I would certainly repurchase again and feel it would work equally well in the cooler months as it does in the Summer. If you are looking to try a range that is free from essential oils then I highly recommend you check out PHB’s Gentle range as you may just discover a new favourite in your skincare routine.
